An attorney-at-law is subject to the following professional regulations according to § 5 (German Telemedia Act):
- Bundesrechtsanwaltsverordnung (BRAO) (Federal Lawyers’ Act)
- Berufsordnung für Rechtsanwälte (BORA) (Professional Code for Lawyers)
- Standesregeln der Rechtsanwälte in der Europäischen Gemeinschaft (CCBE-Berufsregeln) (Professional Regulations of Lawyers in the European Community)
- Rechtsanwaltsvergütungsgesetz (RVG) (Lawyers‘ Compensation Act) and
- Fachanwaltsordnung (FAO) (Rules of Specialized Lawyers).

A patent attorney is subject to the following professional regulations:
- Patentanwaltsordnung (PAO) (Patent Attorney Order)
- Berufsordnung für Patentanwälte (BOPA) (Professional Code of Conduct of Patent Attorneys)
- Professional Regulations FICPI, available online on the website www.ficpi.org, under "FICPI Statutes"
- Professional Regulations of epi (Institute of Professional Representatives before the European Patent Office), as far the patent attorney concerned is authorized to represent before the European Patent Office.

Extrajudicial settlement
When disputes between an attorney/patent attorney and their clients occur there is the possibility of an extrajudicial settlement at the respective bar association (§ 73 Abs. 2 Nr. 3, Abs. 5 BRAO) that is responsible for the respective attorney or the office that is responsible for the respective patent attorney. This possibility will be only granted by request.
